Default Fly Fishing in N'Ireland

Hi all,

Ive just started on the fly for about 4 months, after a few years of bait rod fishing and watching the guys fly fishing. Ive been told by many that im picking it up very quick, but personaly i dont think im doing as well as people think.. see i'm happy with my casting (well, i cant just drop my fly with-in an inch of my target area but i am getting the big far casts) but im not catching on a steady rate. I fish two areas were i live here in Northern Ireland, coming from lurgan, Co.Armagh, my main peg is at Murlock, Moira - a fishery that has some MASSIVE rainbow in it. but i find i make my first catch early and then slack off to a total stop.. ive been giving loads of advice. im using leader sink to hide my leader, setting up a "washing line" using a smal olive buzzer on the droperr and a CDC at the end or a bright yellow wolf may fly (for some reason they take the wolf out here even of season lol) but ive seen me catching 2 in an hour then nothing the rest of the day. Now this isnt just the case at murlock, i also fish the lurancetown river for the brownies. yesterday i was using a we light brown nimph with an orange body and cought 4 VERY small brownies in less then an hour, then tried a wet fly with white tail and little gold head for weight and cought one more. but then it all stoped.. no matter what i tried i could'n get catching again.

This is my problem, I dont catch much. Im geared up with the best of tackle but im not catching well. So PLEASE is there anyone who has seen this before or has any help, this would be great!

Also im looking for new places to fly near me, any good rivers or lakes near Lurgan/Co.Armagh area would be great

Thanks in advance, Paul.

You could look at contacting Armagh Fisheries Ltd. They are a great fishing club. Contact on 02837511738. Niall McKee is the man you want to chat to.

Your local club is the Iveagh, decent water on the Lagan. I was a member for years. The stretch from Geehans bridge on the Dromore road up to Donaghcloney was always good. McIduff fishing and field sports do the tickets and membership forms. The club also gives away a number of free tickets each week to holders of fcb permits http://iveaghac.com/ The Banbridge club isnt far away from you either but there is a waiting list. Fishing is on the Bann, Arrgh!! love/hate dollaghan. for brown trout, dollaghan and salmon and at Corbet Lough for browns and 'bows. http://www.discovernorthernireland.c...nbridge-P10971 Contact Coburns of Banbridge for info.

Is that the Bann at Lawrencetown? I caught my first wild brown there many years ago on a greenwells nymph. If that's where you are talking about there are some good hatches of olives at the moment, try a size 14 dry during the day and something like a sherry spinner in the evening. A grey duster is good anytime and a klink with a small goldhead hares ear nymph New Zealand style will work. There will be dollaghan in the deep water and maybe a salmon. There's a great tradition of fly fishing in our area, you are in for a treat. Did you know the park lake used to be a trout fishery, free for the people of the town? They ran up the wee stream in the golf club in the Autumn and we used to sneak in and try to guddle them when I was a cub. Always finished with an angry golfer chasing us, great fun. Lots of the lurgan men fish the big loughs as well, Erne, Melvin etc.
The put and takes nearby include Murloc, Dungannon Park lake and Eskragh lough. Not my speciality but there must be more as well. Join a club and go on their away trips, you'll love it.

Simon.

Paul, what lines, flies are you using up in murloc? Murloc is a well stocked fishery and i can honestly say i've never blanked any time i've been there may it be all day or just for 4hrs.
