Default Weird looking rainbow

I was out fishing at a local water with the last night and we stayed out well after the sun went down.
I managed to hook a lovely 2lb Brown too

The boy caught a trout on a dry. Ace fight with it and when we got it in it looked like a rainbows profile but had no pink band on it. None whatsoever...?

Has anyone else ever seen a trout like this?
I wanted to take a photo but it's come out rubbish as it was getting dark.

Anyone else caught a fish like that?

John

Hi John,

It sounds like the fish in question is in fact a rainbow trout but one that was stocked a good few months back or possibly even an overwintered specimen. Your boy caught a "resident" fish

For example I caught this fish in my early days - it had been in a fair while! It fell to a little hopper.

Sounds like a blue to me. most of these are a vivid blue colour, but sometimes they go back, and can look like a bright silver rainbow! Blues typically fight harder too...

Speaking of weird looking trout I caught one that looked like an Airbus Beluga at my local stillwater. Had a forehead like Rocky Dennis.

I have seen fish with brown spots above the lateral line no magenta stripe down the lateral and at first look you would think it was a sea trout.
Tk was it anything like that at all.

Rainbows without a stripe are not that unusual and are usually indicative of a fish in good condition and outside the breeding season. These are not necessarily blue trout which are also lacking a stripe but ordinary rainbows. I've also caught sea run rainbows in North Wales that had no trace of a stripe.

Yes mate I did think it looked like a sea trout shoalie TBH but knew it couldn't be as we were in a sealed water. At least I think it is. I'll have to ask.
If it has got access to the rivers, then who knows.

But it may have been a winter or resident rainbow yes but the boy, without being led, seems to think it was blue on the top. But on further probing, he thinks all fish have a blue back lol. He means dark I think.
