Default Rods away time.

Hi all,

Well for me it's getting close to that time when the rods go away for the winter. I've got a couple of weeks at best left for sea trout (if the river ever drops) and maybe one more visit to a still water. Then the gear is put away (apart from the fly tying gear) and won't see the light of day again until the leaves are out on the horse chestnut tree.

Just trying to get a feel for how many others pack away for the winter, or carry on for some winter grayling or any brave souls who endure the freezing weather on our reservoirs?

I'll still be outdoors over the winter, though It will be a different sport. (anyone suggests it's canoeing and there will be trouble! )

Inland trout season closes Oct 1, but I'll be steelhead fishing in the middle of October so rods stay out at least until then.

Technically, one can fish for bass until ice-up, but they become so difficult to catch on the fly that I don't spend any time with the fly rod after Oct 1.

Rods come out again in January if the snow depth allows for river access. Too much snow is bad, but too little and then sections of the rivers freeze bank to bank, which produces a different set of problems.

I agree, I look forward to this time of year with eager anticipation. I love my grayling fishing and being on the river in the Autumn and on those clear, crisp days of Winter is a very special experience.

Nope, not for me. This is when I turn my attention to smallwaters, especially Chigboro (being closer than most other smallwaters)

I love those crisp mornings, breath frosting up, boots crunching on the ice underfoot, hooking that first winter rainbow and celevrating with a well earned cup of coffee (spruced up with a wee dram of something)

Love it!

After 24yrs of having the peak of Summer around December thru February, I do enjoy the pure, crisp Winter mornings of the UK......apart from the slushy wet periods when the snow melts.........mud all over the work shoes and spatters up your trouser legs.......not fun when you are en-route to a meeting

I'll gradually move off the rezzies onto smaller waters and fish right rhrough winter. Several days early this year we broke the ice and caught fish but it is really good in the Oct-December period.

Rib Valley, in fact, starts its season in October so lots of decent fishing to look forward to.

Only really hard period is Jan/Feb, but still will be out casting a line.

I will be closing off my river season with a trip to Austria this week and I look fowards to the winter period when I can fish for shoals of big Roach & chub on a light rod.
