Default success..but why!

Hiya all

I was fishing my local lake again the other day (previous post "frustraing, fickle but fun")with no luck in 5/6 hours using dries/nymphs/wets on floating and intermediate lines (lake is about 6-8feet deep mostly) Again, in one corner where the lake is fed by a stream fish were rising all day with the peak being about 3 to 5pm where several fish would rise in a few minutes and rises would be "splashy", "sippy" and "head and taily" and i could see no evidence of a hatch on the water. AGAIN i tried everything i could think of to get a fish to take my flies but nothing happened until i tied on what i think is a white bodied montana and then suddenly i had 6 takes and 4 fish in about 20mins! The questions that are stumping me are

1. why would the fish be preoccupied with this one fly and ignore all else i "threw" at them....if there was a kitchen sink fly i would have tried that aswell!

2.why could i not tempt any of the rising trout to take a dry fly (i don't think i had any significant presentation problems) but i could get them to take a montana fished almost on the bottom (approx 6feet down)

3. if a hatch was occuring and the white bodied montana was mimicing the rising nymphs then what would the corresponding dry fly be to try as i assume it is this that the fish would be rising to?

thankyou for any help you can give me.....

If it was fisherman's curse (caenis) it would have been a tiny white up-winged fly. When they are feeding on this usually the only way to induce a take is to use a white fly, of any description.

Just a thought.

sounds likely stuart, i thought I saw a couple of tiny white things flying around from a distance but thought they were little pieces of fluff from the nearby rushes ...AND when i lost my only white bodied montana on a snag i put on the only other white bodied fly i had which was a white and purpleish baby doll I also caught a fish albeit not a quickly!! Slowly the mystery is unravelling......

thanks pal!!

Default the curse!

in my limited experience a caenis hatch would have been very noticable with thousands of em clouding around you, seldom have i seen just a few. Is it not sometimes the case thet trout pre occupied by a one natural food source can be "switched" to attack something totally different, fish have no hands so if they are curious, into the mouth!

It's simple - stillwater trout are suckers for a white lure.

Cat's whisker, dancer, white montana, call it what you will, first fly to try on a new venue.

Default yep

find that to be the case too charlie. been fishin a mini cat (b175 12) with straggle fritz body and a wee touch lite brite in the tail for a slight blue "glow"! not the most subtle fly i fish but like you say, almost always a banker especially on tricky days. try this on point and good natural nymph on a dropper, i find the nymph taken on the hang if lure is chased back and refused, sometimes!
