Default It's indescribable; It's indestructable, nothing can stop it....

It crawls, it creeps, it hangs, it slides, it eats your ethics alive!!

Have you succombed yet - to THE BLOB!

A few years ago I somehow decided to tie up an orange blob on a 8 hook, just for the experience you must understand. Sometime later when experiencing a hard day on a local water I scoured my fly box to see what other than the buzzers I had been using, I could try out, There in the corner of the box was "The Blob".

"Oh what the heck", I thought and making sure no-one was looking, I tied it on the end of a midge tip line with a 15 foot leader. The hideous orangyness slowly dissappeared from view as it sank into the depths.

Then my rod was nearly wrenched from my grasp as a 3lb rainbow grabbed the thing. Five casts and five fish later, I was approached by a fellow angler and questioned what I was using.

"Oh no, not one of those things - should be banned - uuurrrggg!! - it's not fly fishing"!

But what do you think? Have you succombed to The Blob yet?

Simply.... YES...

I would love to be able to say I was a 'Nymph' fisherman, which then resorted to dries if it got difficult... but... I'm not ashamed to say I have a box, literally brimmed with large, small, two tone and everything inbetween....

To say that its not fly fishing..... well, that was that one mans opinion, but surely he can't be that blind to igonre their effectiveness???

The whole 'Yobs with Blobs' is a great debate, but arguably, the Blob, does whats required....when its required.....

Sounding like an alien horror from a 50s sci fi movie, the very name of "The Blob" is enough to raise the hackles of any traditionalist!

Some say it suggests a mass of daphnia! A good enough excuse I guess.

There must be something about The Blob that makes it so successful. Why, they even cast down and across the Test with the things these days!

Any suggestions as to what it imitates?

Its a method used up and down the country WK....Some go as far a using a minkie under the 'float'.... even during the middle of the season..... I always thought it was a Winter tactic.....

I even won a Troutmasters Fish Off, with a Black Blob dressed with 4mm Orange Bead under a 'float'.... God knows what they thought it was.... but it worked.

Reutrning to the thread topic.....

It comes across as the 'Blob' was invented?.... To imitate a Ball of Daphnia.... But to me, what Daphnia travels at 60-70mph, moving 4-5ft at a time?

Saying that, It is also effective 'twiddled'....

As for its origins, I spent 6 yrs over the border, circa 1997/98 and a 'Leven Muddler' was what I was introduced to.... which, low and behold, a few years later, I know it as a Blob....

I know 'Captains' Scarlet Blob was damaging stock levels around that time....

Interesting comments guys, keep 'em coming.

And as I watch my screen and type, there in my vice is my latest creation, a chartreuse blob, together with a lime green, several orange and a blue one!

All ready to try out tomorrow.
