If I'm fishing large waters, I tend to aim for droppers around 10-12" helps with a more natural presentation (so Im told)...........and it allows me to change the flies a few times

On the river, bugging mainly, I go for short droppers, circa 2-3", better for bite detection.

Other than that, I would fish what your comfortable with.

I try and use a dropper of no less than 5 or 6 inches but preferrably around 8inches, I find I get no more tangles using this length than a shorter one.

Starts of at about 8 inches, finishes off about about 1 inch. Then I just cut the line, new 3 turn water knot and start again.

5" or 6" to allow a change of fly, maybe two.

What type of fishing is hobbie thinking of?

Seen some droppers as long as 11", was wondering about the tangle element with such long droppers,
2 of the loughs we fish seem to fish better with the longer dropper,

When people say "tangle" do they just mean where the dropper spins round the leader ?? If so then I dont think length makes much odds as you get this happen whatever the length , but................

I have mine at 300 mm not 1 mm + or - The 12 " dropper will mean that if fly does spin around the leader atleast there will ( should ) be some dropper hanging down and thus means fly is fishing as it should .

This is wets we are talking about right ??

For dries keep um short ( ish )
