Maybe... erm, youthful good looks?.. 'Anglo Italian' background? Seriously, a qualified guide may teach you to cast but can he teach you to catch... I remember winning a worldwide trout match @ Sportsfish Theale with Charlie Jardine stood behind me critisising my casting.... Interesting post 'Rusty'

Ps,... 3 of the 4 you outlined would suffice

Any angler who knows his water could do an article in a magazine - The magazine will edit most articles.

I have to say good photos of the Venue , Flies and Fish do add to a good article.

for me the writer should have a very good knowledge of entomology how and when/what to use,and all aspects of fly fishing, they should not be bias as to there own style/s,make the article interesting to read with a good sense of humour thrown in, and dont leave out the things most encounter, in other words true to life (catching trees etc)unlike a lot of fabricated articles in magazines, and dont try conning people on what fly to catch with on a certain water when they then put a picture in of say a rainbow caught on a blob when in the article they apparently have been using nothing other than a buzzer etc....

interesting post Fred
I would say a fake tan,a good GI joe haircut only joking.

I would say 3 out of the four you said, but to add to that this,Honesty in what you write, stand by what you write and make sure it is something which anglers can relate to.
Id rather read a true story rather than a doctored up version for advertising purposes,in the end the angler will always know the truth and makes the writing and magazine look bad.

Pictures are always nice, but they must have a good knowledge and know what they are on about and be prepared to answer questions. No good having someone to write an article if you cant get them out of their own a....se either.

I think first and foremost, writers should be able to write. Knowing what you're talking about is not the same as being able to express it.

I enjoy Robert Irvine's artcles very much as he knows what he's talking about and I have taken on board a lot of his information.

Paul Proctor is always a good read as well and his Fly's are great (My boxes are full of them).

I think JJO ( Well I think that's his username) from this forum did an article for Trout and Salmon that was an interesting read.
