Default Heres one for you..

We often hear that certain flies/lures are the ones that do the damage... Why? Well, because everyone is using em! Take for example the Blob.. Absolute killer in all its guises... yes? Again, why?.. A. Because everyone is using em! Take for example yesterday @ Rutland.. I was catching on Wets... Soldier palmers... Muddlers... my partner was on Blobs..... Both of us were catching... If someone asked me for a killing pattern and I gave him a particular fly.... would he catch? A. Yes! Why? because of nothing more than confidence!! If you are on fish and got the correct line x depth/retrieve you should catch! Another example is say on a competition.... are we to assume everyone who has bagged-up was using the same pattern of fly? The same line? the same retrieve? Nah! depth n location for me.... Discuss

I'm with you on that Cap.....we have way too much emphasis on flies.Location, depth, retrieve, angles and curves are more important to me.

What about fishing on the surface all day? Fly choice comes into that....

I agree though, finding fish it what catches. As Phil stated in the big fly thread, trout are opportunistic.

Location is paramount.

Just what is the horrid blob supposed to imitate or suggest? By the way I have used the blob and have put a longish orange marrabou tail on it. I wonder why people cut the tails short?

Confidence is key. If your confident, then the other things should fall into place, like location, retrieve, depth and flies. Also for comp fishing, the decision making process is fundamental.

Being in the the right place at the right time isn't just about luck, it's about being able to draw on experience and read conditions then make decisions.

But don't confuse confidence with cockyness.
