It's done, it's done, it's done! I've referred to it often so I thought I'd post some pics. The wooden drift boat that a buddy and I spent the 12 months building is done.
It was a great experience, I'm really proud of this boat. At times I didn't think we'd ever get done. Every step takes about twice as long as I'd have thought, half the time figuring out how exactly to do it. Everything on a boat is a combination of an angle and a curve, there are no straight lines on a boat. My hats off to the real boat builders, this one was good enough, but to become good at this game would take a lot of devotion.
But better yet it floats! Yeah, well in theory that shouldn't have been a problem, but you never really know until the hull hits the water.
We gave it a test drive on Sunday. A 12 miles float trip on the upper Mississippi. It works great, it's very light and handles well. Heck, we even caught some fish.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Great Plains Drifter.
The builders. Grouse on the right, Jeff on the left.
Side view. Rather pronounced rocker on a drift boat:
The interior. The interior took as long to build as the hull, that was just one of many "learning experiences" building this baby.
It floats. We took her for a maiden test drive on a lake by my house. What a relief, it's NFL (no friggin leaks).
It catches fish. Jeff with a prime Mississippi smallmouth.
If anyone's ever in the neighborhood get in touch and we'll catch some fish. As the song says, "My love is driftin'. . .
