Default Used nylon

Seen in the Sun this morning {page 49} more than 170 animals and birds have been found dead or dying tangled up in fishing gear. This is just more ammo for the antis. Not long ago while walking my dog round Kilbirnie loch my lab picked up half a mackerel complete with wire trace two size 6 trebles and float, luckily she is soft mouthed,or it could have been nasty.I know most fly fisherman discard their leader properly but, the amount of nylon i pick up seems to say otherwise so please dispose of your nylon properly!

Couldnt agree more. Just use your scissors to snip the nylon into short lengths and it's harmless. takes a few seconds.

Nylon rots quickly, Fluorocarbon has a life of something like a billion years.
Please think about that next time you attach a tippet.

This annoys me too, it takes such little effort to make sure you take it home and dispose of it properly.

Tip for making sure you take home your nylon without it getting everywhere. Take a small pringles tube, tape the lid down and cut a cross in the lid. When you cut your leader off just ball it up and poke it in the tube. Mine lives in my tackle bag all the time, and you can fit so much in it you'll rarely need to empty/change it.

Don't just chuck it in the bin when your done with it though, as it could rupture and release all that nylon at the rubbish tip, either burn it or snip it into small pieces before disposal.

I agree this is bad, in fact it inexcusable.

The problem with stories like this is they pick on us as a minority and forget about the damage done by people chucking everyday litter. Animals choke on plastic and get trapped in the wrapping, I bet the deaths from litter are a 1000 times more than fishing tackle. I've seen pictures of urban foxes with their noses caught in old tin cans, but this does not get picked up by the press.. It's why I crush them closed or flat depending on their type before I recycle them.

Still it's a very sad state of affairs. I've just invested in a monomaster so that I don't have old nylon floating around in my pockets, I was always worried about it falling out.

Cheers

Andy

This made me laugh out loud!

Seriously though how hard is it and how long does it take to cut it up into half inch pieces over a small plastic bag and take home.
