Default Guides

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about fishing with guides. Over the past few years he has been out with guides after both bass and pike. I was SHOCKED, not just at the price but the fact that most of them FISHED while guiding him. Being a Salmon angler I found that very funny.

On one occasion he was out with a business client, they were being guided on a small boat fishing for bass. As there was not enough room on the boat for three of them to cast a fly, the guide took out his spinning rod and started casting a plug. One cast went over the chaps line while he was fishing his fly back.

The other day he went to a bristol Res. after pike. When I asked him how he got on, he said "ok, I had three and the guide had six". Any big ones? "No but the guide had two over twenty pounds". Then he asked if I wanted to see the photos of the guide.

So my question is IF YOUR PAYING £100 plus SHOULD THE GUIDE FISH?

No, unless he is showing you a specific technique or method.
Very very bad practice IMO.

I regularly use a guide, usually when i'm on holiday and it's my first visit to a water. I can honestly say that none have ever fished, apart from when i asked them too, either to demonstrate a technique or to let me see how easy they make it all look! If I was paying £100+ I'd be pretty unhappy at the guide fishing too.

Regards

Peter

any guide who fishes after you have paid him £100+ would not be used again.

I wouldn't fish unless invited by a client. Guiding is guiding --- some of the clients are better anglers than their guides, they just need local or specialised information to help them get the most out of the day. Those who fish uninvited are not earning their pay, they are exploiting the situation by being greedy. TC

wouldn't dream of it. I might occassionally take advantage of the boat (that's been paid for the day) after the client had left but would never fish alongside him/her even if asked to do so.

The first time I was guided by John Tyzack he arrived with just a net and a camera..I knew straight away he would be a good guide and he is.

A good guide should show you where and how, demonstrating if asked to do so.
