Default lightest possible tackle for saltwater?

I was wondering what the lightest possible tackle would be for salt water and with that I mean fishing of the surf/coast/wading for species as mackies, flounder, dab, garfish and such.
I was thinking of a good 6 wt rod like winston or sage to clear the job, or is 7 wt the minimum?

Hi,

Even an #5 weight can be great in some situations... the only drawback I see is that a lot of sub #6 rods come with wooden reel seat inserts and other comonents that might get demaged if not cleaned after every session...other than that, especialy if wind is not a limiting factor you can go very light.

Good luck

I use a 7 weight sage launch which has fighting butt (don't know how effective) and an anodised reel seat. It is light & mid tip. I use it for bass & mullet and do not know how it would fair againt the really big fish. They are on sale at John Norris for a little over 100 quid.
