Just a point of clarification with dead drifting, Mickfly. When you say keeping "in contact", I understand that phrase to mean with a tight line such that you can feel a take. Doing this would make it almost impossible to achieve a true dead drift, since the slightest tension will cause drag, which is bad.

The point where the line starts to arc is where you mend the line upstream. Mending the line is key if you want to achieve a dead drift. Without using mends to control the pace, it's almost impossible.
