Default to catch, or not to catch ,that is the question

On a couple of recent trips i have encounterd fisherman that have said "dont think its worth it today" then after a couple of hours of not catching go home. This seems odd to me for so many reasons.

Personaly i go fishing to cast away the everyday stresses and strains and to stand in the beautiful quiet countryside next to the water . maybe its because i live in the city ,but i cant see how anyone can miss this part of it

As for the fishing side ,when the fishing gets tough that's the time to try new things , expand your tactics and learn, which ultimately can only make you a better fisherman.

Catching does keeps you interested but it can be done on any day,and is proof of getting better at the art especially on days when no one else has caught .

I like trout, but to bag 4 every weekend ,i would get sick of it and so would my friends and family. Also seems a waste of money to pay and then not have your day.

Is this just me? maybe its another sign of me getting old.

I see your point and agree with you. I would never pay for my fishing and then leave before my time/catch limit whichever came first. Assuming being on a fishery of course.

If the weather was really poor, no fish were moving and I was generally having a horrid time I'd pack up and go home. Fishing on hill lochs though you always get something

And your sentiments about trying something new, I totally agree with that too! Definitely a great thing to do, not only to catch but as you say further your skills.

Maybe they have 'other things to do' and don't actually go home - but the missus thinks they are fishing all day!

I hardly ever pack up early if I've paid for a ticket and it's surprising how many times my only fish has been caught on my last cast in the last minute of my time limit!

Sometimes it is not the winning but the taking part.
I fished for 12 hours solid once in the pi**ing down rain and blanked but then thats me.

Perhaps its the difference between and "Angler" and a "Fisherman" fisherman catch fish Anglers are happy to angle without catching naff all,

For me the anticipation of the catch is in some ways more stimulating than the catch itself. However if conditions and my mood conspire then I will leave after a short period.

I think there are times when it is very clear that the fishing isn't going to be good. Then as far as I am concerned there a better things to do than flogging a fly rod for nothing. Such as, tying some flies for the next trip.

I fish untill I've had enough!

Be it, fish - relaxation - suntan - whatever , when I've had enough of what I've gone for, I go home!

I've been there, done that, I'll never learn! But can't resist the challenge!

If we bagged up everytime then it would be boring

I do get annoyed when I blank though as it seems to make all the effort, reading, fly tying and buying the kit a bit pointless.

Sometimes you wonder what the point is. To get a away or to catch fish?

Ilike to do both, so it's nice to get away
and it's nice to catch fish. If I do t I feel like I may as well just have gone for a walk lol

I have a simple strategy I fish until I've had enough. Catching, blanking, good or bad weather when I've had enough I stop.
