Default Entering matches

Just a quick question, would entering a match improve a novices fishing. Or is it better to wait until a degree of expertise is reached.

Many thanks

It wouldn't improve your fishing but you got to start some where. If you feel confident enough sure enter a comp you can only gain experience which may benefit you in the future good luck let me know how you get on

Brilliant, to true Hopper the thought has crossed my mind. Then again I may have an underdog moment a la rocky. Now where's me hoodie I'm going for a run with my rod. Eye of the tiger an all that. Good points so far thanks everyone.

If you are an absolute beginner then don't, but if you are beyond that then entering comps (in my opinion) is worthwhile. I have entered them in order to fish with local guys who know the waters and who are mostly very friendly and willing to give of their experience in return for you doing the same.

I fish in the central area of Scotland and have travelled to Rutland, Eyebrook , Keilder and Pitsford to fish in Lexus Individual comps and each time I was fortunate to meet and share a boat with local guys who were first class boat companions.

Mixing with other anglers does open your eyes to differing approaches to the problems of trying to catch trout, albeit in a competitive way. I have fished at International level and from that experience I would say that there is a difference between these (open entry) competitions and events that lead to International representation. The latter usually being very secretive and ultra competitive.

Best of luck and kind regards,

di3

I got taught a lesson on how to fish Rutland on Saturday in 30mph plus winds. Lesson number one, shorten your leader in big winds to save you looking like a complete ar$e whacking your boat partner.

I wouldn't say I had a great day fishing because my boat partner did me 7 - 0, the only pull I had I hooked and lost the fish in weed. But I enjoyed the company on the day which is another good reason to fish competitions you meet a great bunch of people.
