Default Dropper Rings

Looking for a bit of advice regards dropper rings, does anyone use them? Do they cut down on tangles? What type do you use?

Thinking of trying these to cut down on dropper tangles

I use the Riverge 2mm ones and I find that they tangle a lot less than when using a dropper knot without rings.

If you're getting tangles then it's worthwhile trying to establish why you're getting them because using rings isn't a guarantee of avoiding them.

Some questions to consider -

Are your droppers too long (or even too short)?
What sort of leader material are you using - would a stiffer brand help or is the diameter you're using too thin?
Are you balancing your leader with appropriate flies in appropriate places on the leader?
Are you using a leader that's appropriate to the conditions?
Do you have an issue with your casting - smooth turn over?

Yes, I do use them and wont use anything else, the main reason being that, if you do get a tangle, it is relatively easy to cut off a section and re-tie it without losing the whole trace. They also enable you to tie on a new dropper with ease.

They dont cut down on tangles, per se, as this is mainly down to casting, dropper length, flies being used and also leader material but I do find them easier.

I am not sure on whether they scare fish as some can be rather shiny and I am contemplating blackening them with a marker pen before use.
Still, cant the see difference between a shiny dropper ring and a shiny hook with bits of fur and feather tied on in terms of scaring a fish

If you fancy using them...store them on a safety pin...you can cut down on a lot of the fiddly stuff !tie them on while they are still on the safety pin

Default Dropper rings

Hi,

If your worried about the shine (I was) then have a look at the Carp Rig Rings that are produced also very small with rounded edges to protect the line and produced in dull / dark colours.

Good luck.

I use a Riverge ring on the end of a 9 foot tapered leader,I tie 12inches of fluoro for the dropper and another 3 to 6 feet for the point.
