Already posted this picture in the photo section, but does anybody roughly know how old a fish of this size is,estimated at 4lb,i know browns are slow growing and are about £5.40 a pound to stock because of their slow growth rate and they are fed every day on high protein pellets, would be interesting to find out just how old this guy could be as he is wild.

Interesting Stewart, the only way you an get a true indication (and possibly something about the rate of growth) is to remove some scales and send them of to a biologist for analysis.
Great fish though and well done.
Other than that it would depend on food chain, where he was in the water (e.g. energy versus food equation etc) and probably a whole lot of other factors.

It could be anything from 4 yo to over 12 yo depending on the growth rate for the water and I suspect the fish's genetics. I know of a 13lb trout from Lough Sheelin that was 6 yo whereas the half pounder from a Dartmoor stream might be much older.

That is a nice wild brown trout.

I have read various articles over the years on how old brown trout can live. I have known lakes where one ONE stocking of brown trout was ever introduced to the water and that was 15 years previously. The trout were still thriving after that length of time and weighed anything between 3 and 9 pounds.

I remember reading somewhere that brownies in exceptional circumstances can reach 25 years, although quite honestly it takes some believing.

Rookstorm, that is a cracking trout. Well done. Just out of curiosity, what did you catch it on? TC

What a belter Stewart, a good 4lbs in my opinion.
