John, a friend of mine used a bit of Cif and a nail brush.
It looked like new, honestly.

bung it in the sink and set about it with a scrubber and soap, the only thing to worry about is scrubbing bits of filler out, so scrub across the way as it were.

You take a nail brush to it, you will take all the filler out.

Some bleach rubbed on lightly with a wet sponge, leave for five mins then rinse off with warm water.

Better still, put on U40 cork seal when the rod is new.

Was shown this by a tackle shop owner - use neat wshing up liquid, just put a few drops onto a damp cloth and rub handle gently. Comes up like new without risk of damaging handle.

All best
Mal

this got me thinking, there may be a sensible reason but why is a smooth handle so important?

i can see the point of manufacturers filling to pretend the cork is good.

the best method i have found is to use cillit bang "grime & lime" spray some onto the cork itself ,and some onto a soft nail brush, let the grime and lime soak for a little while, then scrub gently,i sold some rods that were 20 year old and the handles had never been cleaned ,i cleaned them as described and the result was outstanding cork as if it had never been used ,the rods were feeder rods for coarse fishing so you can imagine how grimey they were.

You must be talking about those c4ap rods you use Ryan, never been a problem on my rods.
Just don't scrub like a washerwoman, nice and gently.
Personally I prefer a bit of colour, but each to his own and all that.
