Stewart,

I visited this area earlier this year (I had a great time) and got some information from members in advance of the trip. I didn't get round to fishing Dunalastair while I was there, but the attached thread has some information that may be of interest. The thread meanders into midge repellant and other topics, but its all good stuff and there is a bit about Dunalastair.

Flies for Gaur, Tummel and Nearby Lochs

Let me know if you need accomodation and I can put you in touch with the place where I stayed.

Cheers,

Dovebob

Great loch

Very very dour and if you catch anything you will be doing well. This year two anglers, with two visits (admittedly in poor conditions) with only one take between us (apart from a jack pike).

That said the catch log is amazing with a 2lb brown being the norm.

Go onto Google Earth for a very useful aerial view showing the obvious deep path of the former river bed. I would fish the lower end and focus around Post Office Bay to the far side along the wall...not that my hots tips are first hand judging by my success rate.

It is very shallow...mostly about three foot with tree stumps, dykes and fence post visible right across the water....you will only get away with a floater

I would use a high breaking strain as genuine monsters are regularly caught.

As mentioned before, it is not uncommon for people to fish it for a week and not catch.

Hi Stewart,

It's a very interesting loch, definitely worth a shot. Best advice I can give you is to make sure you are fishing for the final hour, even if you see nothing all day. Fish as late as you're allowed (although make a mental note of the tree stumps and sand banks etc whilst its light!). Don't expect to fill your boots, but if you get a fish or two, they are likely to have been well worth the effort.

Bring some hefty (i.e. 1"+) dry sedges!

Cheers,

Dighty
