Default A question about Tippets

Hi,

I am hopefully(?) going to have the time to get away for a day and actually go fishing during the next week - The problem with living here is that every summer family members think 'I know, let's go and take the kids to Cornwall, we can stay with Neil & Maggie for a couple of weeks' - anyhow, now they have all cleared off I have some spare time

So, back to my question about Tippets - what is the best way to tie them to the leader?

I use a braided loop from fly line to my 9ft tapered leader. Now, connecting the tippet to the leader is it best to use a blood knot or to have a loop in the tippet and connect it the same was that you do your leader to your fly line?

Or does it not matter?

Loop to Loop. leader to tippet(these new words confuse me.It's all a leader as far as i'm concerned)

What are you fishing? Loop to loops create a bit of water disturbance. I find they don't cast as well as normal knotted sections either. In saying that there's no argument about the ease of changing leaders with a loop to loop connection.

Look up a 3 turn water knot, this should keep you right. Some people use more or less turns but i've never had a problem with 3.

Thanks Jim & Scott.

I will be Trout fishing stillwater, I am still an absolute beginner so I guess trying both knot and loop should be best - finding out what suits, so to speak.

In saying that, I like the ease of 'loop to loop', so that appeals.

Again, thanks for the replies.

Or even a "cast" if you go back in the mists of time as we probably both can ..LOL..when you knotted the end of the fly line and doubled the cast loop round it and pulled it tight .

As a beginner go for the loop to loop. You'll find it very easy and should reduce a bit of expenditure of leaders and tippet. I suggest looking up how to tie a perfection loop as it is very easy and one of the neatest ways to tie a loop.

Good luck with the fishing!

I did it only last month, broke the braided loop off (in a tree!) and that was the quickest way to carry on. Nostalgia is a great thing.
