Default Question for any norn iron folk

Hey all,

I was hoping that someone out there can help me out. I'm heading out 2-3 times a week at the minute to my local club [still] waters, of which I'm not yet a member. I'm spending £12 a pop for a day ticket, although I'm usually only getting 4-5 hrs in the evening after work (less each time I go as the days are getting shorter and shorter). I'm on waiting lists for 4 clubs, but as one member told me he waited 12 years to get in.... so Im not holding my breath.

Essentially, my question is... As my addiction is taking firm hold, my bank balance is taking a hammering; can anyone recommend a ministry water close enough to Holywood, Co Down that I could get to easily on an evening after work.

Ta J

There is Portavoe outside Bangor, but I do not know if it is worth fishing. I think most of the DCAL waters suffer from the same problems.

If you fancy driving across to this side of the lough both Straid and Woodford do four hour catch and release tickets. I think about eight pounds. Two excellent fisheries. Woodford also has a membership scheme that could be worth enquiring about.

thanks fossil, never fished any of these, but been meaning to give straid a go for some time now. Didnt know about woodford, website looks good, some big rainbows in there.

What about DCAL rivers, Ive never fished fly fished moving water before, Anyone any recomendations for good rivers in the north that would suit a beginner?

Have fished the Six-Mile a couple of times this year. Seems to be recovering well from recent pollution with plenty of small fish present. Think the day ticket price may increase this time of year due to the dollaghan run, but earlier in the season it was a very reasonable £5 per day.

Holywood anglers have Speers dam and Creightons Green reservoir in Holywood. Tickets available from the newsagents at the bottom of the Church Road, near Tesco. There is also Donaldsons lake on the Church Road in Holywood. Not ministry, but apart from Portavoe (Dog sh1t city..) or Movilla in Ards, I cant think of any other fisheries near you.

You have fisheries like Movilla at Ards and Donaldsons lake near Holywood ,and also Bridgewater Farm near Donaghadee all fairly close to you ,If you look on the dcal website you will see there are quite a few dcal waters not a million miles away either .

Ballygrange fishery is a small but decent place. Is just outside Carrowdore which is a bit further out but I had a great day there recently.

I think the six mile is £15 at the minute as Bear says due to the Dollaghan run.

Thanks Guys, Ive fished Crightons and Donaldsons quite a bit, never done spears but might give it a go tonight. As for Movila ... does that have a number of lakes... Think I might have fished for tench and chub there a while back. Portvoe ive never tried, nor Bridgewater or Ballygrange. Must look into them.

Maybe its a good Idea if I stick to the stillwaters for the rest of the season and give moving waters a go next season.

Cheers for the info guys
