Default New Camera

Hi got a new Camera yesterday to replace my Fuji Finepix S5700 so I got the Samsung ST50 12.2 Megapixel Digital Camera and got it for a great deal at tesco but after taking a pic with it and downloading it to the pc I found that the fuji finepix camera was much better yet this is only a 7.1 megapixel so I took the camera back got a refund and went to a proper camera store and was told its not all about the pixels but the make and size of the lens so I got to try two cameras within my budget
1st the Kodak Z980 12 megapixel 24x optical zoom 3in lcd screen and a cracking bit of kit I must say
2nd is the sony DSLR 200K 10.2 megapixel with 18-70mm Lens again a great piece of kit so my question is this does any one on the forum have or owned one of these 2 cameras and could you help a man choose the right camera as to me this is a lot of money for a camera and dont want to choose the wrong camera

yeah its not the pixel size it counts its the tool thats using it

best cameras ive been told is between 7 and 8 and cameras with 10-12 pixels are trying to cram to much it ends up being blurry or to get that perfect shot you need the camera on a tripod and nothing to move

but hell, im not an expert just what i hear from other people

Hi Alan,

A lot depends on what type of photography you are focusing on, forgive the pun. If it is serious imaging you are after then you are better off with a DSLR.
The advantage of the Sony being a DSLR then you have the opportunity to add other lenses. Also the one thing that the Sony has that is adventagous is the image stabilization built into the camera body. This is not something you find in a lot of other DSLR's. It is also worthwhile checking on the types of memory card used by both cameras as cards can differ quite a bit in price. Bear in mind that the DSLR does not have a video mode. As you mentioned it's not all about pixels, it's the image sensor that makes the difference.
I have a Sony A100 DSLR with five additional lenses, but I am a bit of a camera buff. Having said that I use a Sony 12.1 mega for most of my candid photography.

Like most things in life, it's what you are comfortable with. Hope some of my rantings help.

Eddie

good advice from Eddie, i prefer canon for dslr's though or the nikon is very good i have had a 300d for 5 years now i think it is and faultless also have an eos 10d, but for carrying in my fishing waistcoat i use a panasonic TZ5 has 10 times zoom for any across the bank shots of fish holding and very compact with faultless quality images

also one point with a DSLR you can add a polarized filter and get some fantastic images of your sport in the current and rising for flies, i spend hours photographing fish rising

I think the biggest mistake people make when buying cameras is to focus on the mp number. This is largely a marketing ploy and as such works however the claims from some of the manufacturers are quite frankly ludicrous.

There is no way you can accommodate 12mp in a tiny lense and sensor, it's just not genuine but what they are in fact doing is using something called "interlacing". This in effect mean that there may be 12 million pixel but they're overlapped so in reality it's probably on half the amount of pixel claimed.

DSLRs (I'm a nikon owner) will have a genuine mp count due to the large sensor and apetures and hence a much higher quality final output.

I have a cannon powershot sx 200 which I use when I don't want to take out my canon eos out.

Its a great camera, I have only had it a few weeks. So far so good. 12 times optical zoom is very good! Picture quality is good as is the software in the camera which seems to sort out the shot really well. Can't see any point in the manual settings 90% of the time.

It was top camera in stuff magazine this month.

Andy
