Could anyone give me a few hours or less one to one help with basic fly tying, I have tried all sorts of books videos, but none tell me exactly how to select and use feathers or other materials as such, they name some materials and I just do not know what they are reffering too. Helppppppppppppppppppppppppp I live in Essex not far from Hanningfield fishery.

Contact SunkistBob he's in Malden and is starting out tying too, so perhaps you could learn together

Sadly Roger, I am in a similar boat ('scuse the pun) but am learning fast by watching the SBS's on here and just by asking a few questions.

I am doing well with tying up Diawl Bachs and would be happy to show you (just dont ask me for help with a whip finish) and live close to H'Field in Benfleet

Hello Ben well I don't know what diawa bachs are but sounds interesting can you do hackles (what ever they are) for dry fly. I am near Burnham On Crouch I know Benfleet and the Tarpots etc, and would be great as I know you know far more than me and any help would be appreciated maybe you can also show me what the various materials are, as they say in books take ? something but I don't know what ius what. Think we could have a meet up would be very appreciated . All I have done is a few scraggy nymph type things so real easy, but I am sure you could get me going.

I doubt I could show you much more but I know a few basics and have some great Tying books to pore over.

I can do a basic hackle but find that once I have mastered a few basics it is very easy to begin progressing from there.

Diawl Backs are fantastic flies to have on a dropper or as a bob fly (top dropper) or even just on their own or as a team. Relatively easy to tie though getting the throat right can be fiddly and I have huge hands so even more difficult

Where do you fish?

Starters always used to begin with the black & peacock spider.
I think the Diawl Bach's a better starter fly though, purely because it's still basic but has a few more elements (allbeit not a wound hackle).
