Default Boating Etiquette

Following from a previous post on fishing etiquette.......

I really think that lakes and resevoirs around the Country should provide a list of 'Do's and Dont's' and, at least, some 'Etiquette Behaviour' advice.

Take Hanningfield this Sunday as a prime example!

Fishing on the Bubble Line, there were two boats anchored slap-bang directly on the Bubble Line - the prevailing wind was perfect for long drifts down the line yet because of these two numpties, this meant that no boats could safely drift down the line.

Then, there was a boat with two spin-fisherman (nothing against that) who insisted on using their oars to manouver directly in front of us and the free drift all over the place. They were also standing up in the boat when casting and retrieving.

And, dont get me started on people who let down/retrieve their anchor against the gunwhale to create a god-almighty noise.

If I ever do anchor, it is well away when any other boats on the drift and certainly never on a main drift near a hot spot.

Peasants and luddites, all of 'em!

I agree. Each to their own and all that........except when it comes to cretins who can't handle a boat.

I hate to disagree, but i disagree!

My way of thinking is basically first come first serve. I think if they got there first, found fish, and decided that anchoring is the best way to go about the fishing, then they have the complete right to do so. Admittedly, if the fish are concentrated in one spot and anchoring meant no-one else could get at them, i would pull up and drift, so everyone got a shot, not to be selfish.

I have more of a problem with the kind of people that anchor on a drift line [I]while [I] I'm drifting, or motor far too close to the boat, drift too close to the boat, anchor too close, motor in front of where i'm about to drift. The worst of all, are those who see you catch on a drift,, then steam in behind you and anchor up on that spot.

Personally, i love drifting but don't get many opportunities to do so. I love loch-style and think it's a great way to fish, so can understand your frustration at not being able to do so. But i find wether i drift or anchor there's always somebody that has to be told to **** off.

I do agree that a lot of people need lessons in handling a boat, and what is(n't) acceptable to do on a boat. A guy was trolling around, which obviously isn't permissable anyway, then proceeded to reverse towards our boat. He got a little close, so i said 'excuse me mate'. hello, he said. 'Planning on staying there long?' i asked as he motored over our lines. I'm just moving around a bit mate, oh you're gonna have to unwrap your line from my propellor. You should watch where you're casting, it's not fair somebody like you taking up the whole lake, others of us want to fish as well.

What a wazak.

PS when you say bubble line, do you mean the aerators? Or is this some feature of hanningfield? (never fished it)

I've started fishing the big western lakes of ireland again after a long break and I've noticed a real lack of consideration for other boats. Used to be no one would cross your drift within several hundred yards now they will motor right past your nose on a drift - mind you I really only fish at mayfly time and thats when most boats and most numpties are out.

Yes, the Bubble Line is the name given to the long aerator that runs through the middle of the resevoir.

Rather interesting watching some getting their anchor stuck on that beast........you should see them try and pull the whole thing up to disentangle the anchor and line from it (I know, I was one of them )

Never fished anywhere with one like that. I do entirely agree with you on that point then. Surely drifting along that line would be more rewarding and more enjoyable than anchoring. I didn't think you were allowed to anchor on the boils anyway... no marker buoys?

Default Etiquette?

I've worked on a golf course for the last 15 years and in that time have seen a decline in golf course etiquette, not raking bunkers, not repairing pitch marks, not replacing divots, throwing litter in bushes, the list goes on . What i notice is that people pay their money and feel it is their right to do as they please with no regard to anyone else around them, the bottom line is people in general dont give a damn, they just want to turn up, play golf and go home, the same can apply to fishermen.

God I have to agree. I always do my reservoir fishing from a boat and have done for many years. Some of the sights I see today are absolutely shocking!

I was fishing from a boat at Arnfield a few weeks ago, drifting with drogue out. I hooked a fish and played it in. This prompted another boat to lift his anchor () and motor up my drift a full 100 yards, right up to my boat, all to ask "whatcha catch that on mate?"

Bloody idiots.
