Small grayling take like lightning. Because of the structure of their mouths, they can be quite tricky to hook and when hooked they will sometimes race downstream, getting rid of barbless hooks if there is slack line. The larger fish are easier to hook, provided you do not strike too quickly. Where you see a gentle wide ring forming, watch out. These can be really nice fish. Also, it helps if you use lower profile flies, like parachutes, klinkhammers and emergers that fish in the water film. Practise shorter casts and avoiding slack line. It's amazing how close you can get to grayling. Sometimes you see them swimming around your feet.
