The Streamdance range come in the following.

Presentation: Softish action, for close up work.

High Line Speed: Faster action for more distance.

Max Line Speed: Stiffer action for wind/distance casting.

Try the rod before you buy it, as i've found the Streamdance rods stiffness varies. The 5 weight Max is not a very stiff rod, whereas the 6 Max is a real poker. There are real variations within the ranges.

Like any rod, try before you buy, with the line you intend to use on it.

Also check the rod over first, for ring alighnment, cork etc, as Loomis have a ropey reputation for inconsistent finishes on their rods.

Hi peebster if its my rod you are talking about there is not a fault in it.But ryan is right you should allways try before you buy Go to a shop and try one out see the prices then come back and buy mine. Or if you are near Fife come and try mine.

marketing blurb would have you believe expensive or fast action rods are for more experienced casters, i reckon with a good rod it is always easier to achieve a good result whatever the experience.

If you are only going to have one rod, a mid action #5 rod is your best bet. You can fish close up with it and cast a full line. Under line it for light work, overline it by 1 for heavier flies etc.

The tip action, stiff as a poker rods are designed for casting competions rather than fishing, IMHO

not tried the HLS, only the MLS, the HLS being the softer of the two could hardly be described as stiff, the streamdances are the only loomis rods i like the others do seem to be very stiff.

My first point when you say you're thinking of "buying a g loomis" is that you should buy rods, not brand names. Why limit yourself to on particular label? Don't you want the best rod for your experience and fishing? If so, then you shouldn't limit yourself to only one brand. There is far too much label loving going on in today's fly fishing scene, real anglers buy performance, not labels.

Secondly, this bullshit about "high line speed" is just the lates bunch of marketing trollop in the endless slagheap of bigger, faster, stiffer, and now we have "high line speed." It's all designed to convince fishermen that the latest new top of the range rod really is somehow different from last year's top of the range rod.

Don't worry about line speed as a beginner. Hell, don't worry about it even when you're not a beginner. Find a medium to medium fast action that suits your fishing and feels good to you and get out there and put your fly in the water.

The Grouse makes a few points in his reply some valid.Allthough i think it would be hard to buy a rod without a brand name on it I think they all have that. Also he suggest getting a "medium to medium fast rod" maybe a few suggestions would help as peebster is new to fishing. The rod in question is a very good rod (not just my opinion) but yes to justify spending that amount of money on a rod can be seen as excesive but you only live once if its your money you can do what you want with it.When you look at fags £5+ for a packet, to me that is worse than spending a few quid on a rod. At least at the end of the day you still have your rod.
