North Country Angler is on a distinguished road
Default Rivers on BBC1

Am I the only person who's been intensely disappointed by this series so far? Last nights's episode featured 10 minutes on a bloody canal forchirssakes!! Couple that with a piece on stillwater carp fishing and a few minutes looking at the stillwater fed fountains at Chatsworth and I have to say I found the whole thing very tedious.

What about the history, habitat, geomorphology and biology of this most fascinating of environments??

I thought GRJs' 'mountains' series was mighty poor and it looks like this is no better.

Bah humbug.

I gave up after comments made by the self-proclaimed champion of the cause GRJ regards access to rivers in the first episode.

I watched with a bit of interest, mainly because GRJ was visiting Chatsworth, the Trent and Swarkstone bridge, all of which are pretty local to me.

I agree that it would be better if he included some underwater footage and got into it a bit more.

The carp fishing bit was dull as ditch water, but that's probably the nature of carp fishing and not GRJ's fault.

I've taken GRJ to task in our next issue for what I thought were irresponsible comments that some idiots - anglers or canoeists - will take as the green light to cause trouble.

That said, I can only be so angry with the man who gave us 'The News for the Elderly' in his Not the Nine o'Clock News days and I enjoyed Sunday's programme (although I take the point about stillwaters).

I do wonder, though, if the hypocrisy of using anglers when it suits his purpose has occurred to him yet.
