Default fishing etiquette

in my last 2 fishing trips on 3 occasions someone has plonked themselves right beside me and started fishing like im not there, even casting for rises straight in front of me.

is this just rude or am i a misserable old git? 2 of these people were whipping the water like they were making meringues. so maybe they were new and didnt realize but the still looked like they had been fishing a while. maybe i should have said something but i just moved on to save the hassle.

if i am a misserable old git then i will take it on the chin, it wouldn't be the first time ,but it really annoyed me at the time.

ok . therapy over i feel better now.

A swift slap to the back of the head often works

Happens all too often, I'm afraid and it's not just confined to yobs.

There's a bunch of OAP regulars at Draycote who will surround you if you are fishing where they want to be and shout and bawl at each other until you give up.

One in particular has a mouth the size of the reservoir. He spotted me catching, last year sometime, wandered up for a chat and next thing I know..his lne is wazzing out about 10ft. away from me.

This happened to me last weekend as well... Was at Carbeth and no-one was catching! Then I got two in three casts. My brother was fishing 10feet away (only his second trip so I keep him near by!) then with 5mins there was a guy in between me and my brother!!

My brother who is only 15 recognised that it was too close for fishing so we moved off to another spot as he just felt uncomfortable since he isn't that good at casting... and we caught more fish while that guy didnt get anything all day. He should have been looking at the tactics being fished not the place.

It happens frequently on most fisheries thats why I pick and choose where I fish for rainbows cos some small waters around the central belt of Scotland are terrible for bad manners.

Fishery management is where the problem should be nipped in the bud , However if you have a regular on a fishery who is casting over a visitor then management more often than not ignore the problem.

Its just plain ignorance.

I've had it happen to me whilst fly-fishing and coarse fishing. Anglers will often appear from hundreds of yards away to fish on your shoulder once you start catching. To me etiquette is the mark of an angler.

I was pleasantly surprised the other day to hear a new, 17-year-old, member of our fishery ask a fellow angler if it was ok to fish near him - he was 20 yards away!

I once remember catching chub on the Derwent at Borrowash, near Derby. An angler approached on the far bank and fought his way through Hawthorn bushes to try and trot the same swim. He still couldn't trot the same line down the river and gave up after half an hour or so.

It was quite pathetic watching his attempts, he must have been ripped to shreds, but it was highly amusing to watch the lengths he was going to latch on to those fish

It's not just fishing, it seems to be life in general at the moment and it saddens me. There's defintiely a big dollup of etiquette and respect lacking.

How about trying something like this when some ignorant plonker comes and invades your fishing spot. Move off a few yards and don't fish, just watch to see what he gets up to. When he hooks a fish go rushing up waving your landing net, insist on netting it for him and then make a total cock-up of it and lose it for him. Apologise profusely and demand to see what he is fishing with, even going so far as to grab his leader to have a look. If you succeed in this just snap it off the leader saying that you haven't got one of those, and if he continues to fish in your spot you'll keep on knocking off both his fish and his flies. Go on your way s******ing quietly.

Or simply point out he is to close by embedding one of your flies about his person on your back cast. Then apologies and say you didn't think anyone would of been as daft to stand so close, especially with my wild casting technique....or let them cast out, then put your line right over the top of theirs and retrieve like there is no tommorrow. im sure they would move on.
