Default rod size

why do people reckon a 9ft rod is better than 11 ft for stillwater ?

Which stillwater? Bank or boat?

Who reckons that? Surely the "best" is what a person feels most comfortable with Individual basis!

A shorter rod causes less leverage on your arm, you could argue it's less fatiguing over a days fishing. etc etc

A longer rod may give easier control of flies when close to a boat for example. etc etc

IMO go try some out and see what you prefer. 9ft or shorter is my weapon of choice for anything. Shorter depending on conditions...

It's a matter of personal preference but I would always recommend a 9' 6" rod for reservoir bank fishing. I would agree that 11' was too long - and could be tiring to use for any length of time.

like you say 11 foot puts a lot of leverage on your wrist, with less control.

it should feel so nice you want to do it all day.

Longer rods tend to be very heavy on the wrist and arm. I dont think I could fish for more than an hour with an 11' rod before calling the paramedics out.
I use an 8'6" for small stillwater and rivers, a 9'6" #6 Sage, as it is extremely light, for large reservoirs.

Long rods are harder to stop and stopping the rod crisply is what really pings the line out. You will make it easier on yourself if you use a shorter rod, and you will cast more snappily too.

I like 9 footers for bank work. The #6 you mention would be a good all round choice
