Hi Mass, thats a very opened answer mate....?

Depends on all sorts! Wind, cloud, insect life on the day etc.

What were conditions like when you went out and struggled to catch?
Maybe someone can offer advice on what to do on those days

Well fish always have to feed on something, so if they're not eating hatching insects then you have to go sub surface and use nymphs etc on a flaoting line with different length leaders (to get different depths) or an intermediate line which will go down slowly.
If they're deeper down than the first few feet, go for a DI3 or even DI7 and a whole range of tactics open up to you then.
Washing line is a good one.

Sinking line, booby or something that floats on your point fly and then a nymph or two on the droppers. This creates a nice U shape and you fish more layers

Still a bit of an open ended question as if we could put everything you needed to know about fishing in a paragraph it would get boring
