Trout Of Doubt is on a distinguished road
Default Fly magazines

Having only really read Trout & Slamon in the past I stumbled across Fly Fishing and Fly Tying the other day and wondered what people's favourites are and why?

I subscribed to Trout Fisherman and when funds dictate I'm going to subscribe to Total FlyFisher and take advantage of there subscription offer, (free rod). I also have just purchased FlyFishing and FlyTying. I'll read anything I can about Fly Fishing at the moment having just re-taken it up.
But I do prefer Total FlyFisher and Trout Fisherman. I do like there content, the story's, the tips and guides. If I'm not fishing I want to be reading about it...

I just can't get enough...

Theres a couple of good American Magazines i found in my local Borders, obviously not much on British waters in them, but i like the long Stories about fishing trips to Montana and British Columbia etc etc. Fly Rod and Reel is my favourite

Must admit to being a sucker for trout mags, the only 1 I don't buy that's available over here is Fly Rod & Reel as it's to expensive £4.25 & only available in "Borders" which is awkward to get to. Okay it doesn't have many ads in it, but the amount of content for that price is limited, to put it mildly.
So it's Trout & Salmon, Trash sorry Trout Fisherman, Fly Fishing & Fly Tying (U.K) Todays/Total Flyfisher, Fly fisherman (U.S.) Fly Fishing & Fly Tying Journal (U.S.) & others as & when they are available.

There's a yearly one from U.S. called Fly Tyer & that's spectacularly good, published by Will Mullis in September. I've yet to see a copy of "Chasing Silver" but I gather it's also very good.

I like FF&FT but don't think it's the doyen that others do. Don't subscribe as there are a few incredibly bland issues per year (for me), but understand why others hold it in such high regard.

The new look T&S is much improved IMHO. The cover format is too bitty but the content seems more plentiful and interesting to my eye anyway.

Of the others, Fly Rod and Reel is a firm fave of the US titles and for a Trans-Atlantic mag, try Fish and Fly (current issue provided with a £10 trial 3 months subscription to Fish and Fly website - I'll probably be renewing as the mag is worth the price alone IMHO).

Gave up on Trout Fisherman a while ago as most of my fishing is on rivers vice stillwaters, but it was no worse than the others in the sense of being derivative.

Resurecting an old thread ...

I've been reading FF&FT fairly consistently for about 6 months now. Locally it's only this and T&S that I can regularly find without commiting myself to every issue, which I don't want to.

I do like quite like FF&FT, but it seems to have less on river technique and tackle than T&S. Does this seem fair to others, or have I not read enough issues?
