Trout Of Doubt is on a distinguished road
Default North - South devide

It strikes me that there are good trout rivers in the North and good trout streams in the South.
Is this a fare (crass) generalisation?

As one who lives not far from you, I agree.

Nice thing for me is I'm off home ( Scotland ) tomorrow for a week and the fishing gear will be in the car.

Fair point ....... however, and generally speaking, we tend to struggle a bit the further East you venture.

Fished the Test and the Itchen and thought they were a load of overrated guff (apart from the "salmon pool" in Southampton )

They are just drains filled with stockies?

I would far rather have aday on the likes of the Cumbrian Eden or the Annan.

Bit of a generalisation there Texxa (and see my signature for thoughts on those). Fish the commercial beats and that's what you get, but it's not the whole story by any means.

Right with Bumps here. Folks should not write off each and every mile of each and every chalk stream simply because of the perceived state of just a handful of highly publicised corporate beats on the middle Test. The upper Frome, the Piddle or the upper Wiltshire Avon, to take just 3 that I know, are surely better examples of the best of South of England fly fishing. Accidental's book is a very instructive read in this respect. So is Bumps' blog !
