Carsington Water (http://www.moretoexperience.co.uk/se...ConWebDoc.3183) is probably closest. Nice scenic drive to Tittesworth (http://www.flyfishingvenues.com/venue.asp?venue=548). Not too far down to Foremark.

Check out this thread on Carsington - it is really a superbly run water and has excellent fishing. It's not fishing too badly at teh moment but can be daunting for a newcomer. Also it can be difficult during the day time but teh fish do tend to move up in the water later in the day. I tend to go out in the afternoons because of work and other committments and find that a floater is all you need.

Carsington....superb

Missed It,

I wouldn't recommend taking your 9 year old to Carsington or Formark for his first session. They are both large still waters which can fish very well at times but can be difficult at others. If you imagine starting a youngster off at Chew, Hanningfield, Blagdon, Rutland, Pitsford etc. etc. - your in that ball park.

If you want a small, well stocked stillwater I would suggest you give Guy Field at the Yeaveley Estate a call (01335 330247). Yeaveley is primarily a clay shooting ground but there is a small lake which is ideal for youngsters and beginners. I've not fished it for years but if you give Guy a ring he will let you know how its fishing and if its available. He is a very accomodating chap (and not a relative or friend !!!) Yeaveley is about 3 or 4 miles south of Ashbourne on the A515. There is a nice pub next to the estate for some pop and crisps after a busy day.

If Yeaveley is busy, have a look at Alton Manor. Its further away, but is smallish and is well stocked.

I hope you and your lad enjoy your first session in Derbyshire. The county has a lot of fishing to offer and I think you'll want to come back.

Cheers Dovebob,
Sounds good, will give him a call, oohh,i hope they serve lemonade with the pop,as i no you northern lot(north of watford gap),think your drink is strong, and i dont want to get silly on full blown pop,
A good ,easy catch will help boost his appetite for fishing if the catches .Big water are ok,if you take a boat, but i want to start him off gently. Is ther a water at idridge hay?

I'll see what I can find out about Idridghay.

Re. "Pop" - if you get the chance, try a pint of Marston's Pedigree and Bass Bitter. They are both served nationwide and you'll probably see them down your way, but they get much better (especially Pedigree) the closer the pub is to Burton on Trent. Its a bit like Guinness in Ireland - some how it tastes better !!!

Ashbourne is considered by "serious" Pedigree drinkers (of which I am not one) to be at the limit of how far Pedigree will travel and still remain at its best. It should be a good pint. Bass travels better but should still be better in Ashbourne than hundreds of miles from Burton.

There is also a micro brewery just north of Asbourne (I think its called Leatherbritches) which does some quality brews.
