Default Harlaw later this week...

Hi all,

Any word on how Harlaw is fishing at the minute? I'm planning a visit there later this week and i've not been before, so any pointers would be great. Also, do any of you know whether it's still £10 from the post office in Balerno?

Cheers

P

Talking

no mate pay at the bothy and get to meet Alec the main man at harelaw ,a very good and helpful guy all-round.
£8 catch n release and £14 for 2 fish and on and on here is the link for the place,,http://www.harelawfishery.com/.

and as for flies ,Alec says they are wanting drys at the moment and will come up for them no problem ,its just a matter of Patience ,"something i don't have allot of " so for me Ive caught every time Ive used this cast either a gold head hares ear or bibio on the point and Kate Mclaren on mid dropper with either orange or green tail and another bibio on the point .

their are many casts that work well on the dam and your best man has got to be Alec he can be a show off at times ,its great to watch though.

Whatever you like to use will catch fish on Harlaw. You can walk across the water on the fishes backs, there are so many in the place....
Permit is up to £15 and are no longer available at the waters edge from the bailiffs, you have to get them from the PO...have fun...

Aye there is access around the whole perimeter,no need to wade,in fact I would advise against wading as some areas drop away sharpish. The banks can be muddy though, particularly just now with all this rain so wellies or thigh boots will do ye....

Default Harlaw, without an E

Close but no cigar UFlyMan, nowhere near Glasgow, better start in Edinburgh.

Phoxinus, ask arthur.howes@virgin.net. I haven't been since last Sept when it was good as ever, though wet. Although that's a much more up-to-date report than the Malleny website. I envy you, don't catch them all, I'm going in September. I was up to my middle there one year when my mobile rang and, joy oh joy, I was able to say "I can't talk to you now, I've got a trout on the other line."

I should have said that Harlaw (no e) is the friendliest and one of the most scenic places I've fished. If they think you're not catching quickly enough one of the Malleny members will give you good advice and one of his sure flies. The ticket covers a lot of the adjacent Threepmuir (Brownies only) as well. Pics are at the Malleny website in Esk's post, as are the price and catch limit details.

I agree about the mud but it can be avoided. Wading isn't too bad in spite of the steep shelving, the water's pretty clear. Main snag I find is it's a bit of a trek from the car park in waders.

I withdraw my comment about the up-to-dateness of the website, sorry Arthur if you're listening, I looked at the catch return dated2005 not the 2009 report in Club News.

If you're fishing on Sunday get a ticket on Saturday, especially as Wee Jimmy says you can't get one from the Bailiff.

They have a website.

http://www.mallenyangling.co.uk/

Take your waders, there are bits of the bank that are a bit tree lined and getting in a bit can help. They'll keep you warm too .
