Default Fly fishing newbie

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone, another newbie to flyfishing. I've recently come over from Aus to live here and am desperatley missing my fishing. I'm use to beach fishin in Sydney but have always been keen to try fly fishing for trout. I've finally purchased a rod and some basic tackle to get me started and I am now after some much needed advice on how to go about things from here. I'm not really looking to join clubs or get tution or any thing fancy just yet. All I'm aiming to do is have a bit of fun. I'm confident I will be able to cast with a bit of practice but as far as specailist tactics and tackle I have no idea. I'm a bit confused on which type of flies I want to be using and things like that. My gear was cheap from The Range, as I said I'm no professional fly caster. Some datails: Location: I would prefer to fish a river/stream. I'm not particularly keen on these ponds you have in this country. I live in Market Weighton which is near York. I think Driffied is the nearest Trout stream and if so has any one fished there before? Target species: Trout I supose Rod: This is where I get confused. It called 'Fladen Vantage Fly' 270cm / 9' Aftma 6. So is this a 6 weight rod then? The other thing is it seems very long. 4 pieces. Not sure if this is good or bad Reel: 5/7 I'm assuming that is the weight range again. Reel seems ok actually. Fly: I've bought a pack of wet flies but I'm not sure if I need dries or nymphs? Rig: As far as backing/fly line and leader go. For backing I've just put about 50m of 3kg mono fishing line. Thats probably totally wrong but I couldn't get hold of any nylon backing and I don't plan on getting down to the backing any way. Fly line must be ok cause it was £20 which I'm assuming should do the job. Then 2kg leader. Not sure how long to make it and what knots are used for joining fly line to mono. Then fly wet or dry. As I said I won't be dissapointed if I don't catch anything but I just need to get out there and have a go. Any thoughts or ideas or advice would be a great start for me. Thanks very much Nathan. P.S. No more Ashes jokes please!

Default Getting Started

Hi there Nathan, Like you I wanted to learn it all by myself. I shunned angling clubs or any organised bodies for many years and as a consequence wasted lots of time doing all the wrong things and not getting solid advice from the local guys who were in the know. Advice relating to where when and how will be freely given by most anglers and they will certainly be happy to give you advice on tackle and technique for the locale. Have a chat with the folks in the tackle shop as they are usually involved with the clubs and will be happy to make introductions. Your 9 foot 4 piece 6 weight rod is just about the perfect allrounder and will handle any fish up to double figures, yet is still light enough to make catching a half pound brownie good fun. There is nothing to stop you fishing a worm or the natural minnow (where allowed) with the fly tackle if the stream is swollen and dirty. You can even fish a small Mepp or Devon Minnow if conditions dictate. Enjoy your sport.
