Default BT Scam

Anyone heard of a BT scam going round. I got a phone call last night and when I picked up the handset a guy started giving a load of patter hello mr.c how are you today, straight away I thought another bl**dy sales man so I said whatever your selling I don't want one don't need one and am not buying one goodnight and put the phone down, 5 seconds later phone rings again I pick the phone up and this guy says this is BT WERE NOT SELLING ANYTHING WE ARE GOING TO CUT YOUR PHONE OFF I said be my guest I don't have an account with BT and put the phone down again. I was telling the tale to a mate in the pub earlier and he said its a scam to get you to phone a number to pay some money off your bill by plastic and then they have your card details to do what they like with. so if the same happens to you just well I don't need to tell you what to do do I.

Default BT scam

Apparently we had an automated call - supposedly from BT - which said 'Press 2 to hear more about free 24hr a day, 7days a week calls'. No idea whether it was an attempted scam or not as HWMBO put the receiver down immediately...

Might have been!

Thanks Alan. I've not fallen for this one but a week ago we had a call from Barclaycard Fraud Protection, asking if I'd used the card that morning (it was 9.30 am). I hadn't, but it had been used twice in India and once in Canada for purchases around £30 each. Obviously we cancelled the card and yesterday I got a claims form in the post to reclaim the money taken. The point is this - I've never used the card for online purchases and am very careful about not letting the card out of my sight in shops. It is likely that someone who took my details for a phone purchase sold them on to the scumbags who tried to use the card abroad.
Everyone seems to think that internet purchases are 'dodgy' but phone calls can easily be tapped or card details passed on - just a friendly warning!

I had a similar experience several years ago = £3000 worth of transactions in 2 hours before Barclays (very efficiently & effectively) spotted the abnormal usage pattern and contacted me.

I was told by their fraud people that the internet is actually the safest way to use the card, closely followed by phone purchases and that, most commonly, details are stolen in a shop/garage purchase (or used in a cash point) when cards are either read by a person or scanned by an illegally fitted card "reader".

I'm not sure if they are right, but that's what they reckoned at the time.

Cheers

They are correct. I've now been 'done' twice, both times through local garages - the previous time money was taken via an ATM in Canada.

My bank thought they were doing a good job by cancelling my card after it had been used in Canada... only thing was they cancelled it when I was using it to buy a few souvenier flys on my last day there as had no cash left... Numpties!

Good thing the owner of the shop was a really nice guy and gave me three flies for my troubles

It's always best to phone your card companies before you go away and tell them where you are going and for how long. That way you can use your card while there but anyone using the card numbers in that country after you come home will ring alarm bells!
