Obviously we cancelled the card and yesterday I got a claims form in the post to reclaim the money taken. The point is this - I've never used the card for online purchases and am very careful about not letting the card out of my sight in shops. It is likely that someone who took my details for a phone purchase sold them on to the scumbags who tried to use the card abroad.
Everyone seems to think that internet purchases are 'dodgy' but phone calls can easily be tapped or card details passed on - just a friendly warning!

I had a similar experience several years ago = £3000 worth of transactions in 2 hours before Barclays (very efficiently & effectively) spotted the abnormal usage pattern and contacted me.
I was told by their fraud people that the internet is actually the safest way to use the card, closely followed by phone purchases and that, most commonly, details are stolen in a shop/garage purchase (or used in a cash point) when cards are either read by a person or scanned by an illegally fitted card "reader".
I'm not sure if they are right, but that's what they reckoned at the time.
