Any newbies to the game might find this interesting

An animated process of how to tie various knots and main uses of knots.

Just click on the knot at the top for step by step tying.

I stumbled across this too and have found it quite useful. As a beginner the animation does make it easier to see whats going on.
Any recommendations on which knots are most practical in terms of strength/ease of tying whilst you're fishing?
Are there other knots that are better? I've seen links on the forum for the Trilene and Palomar knots, and have been using the Trilene knot for tying on flies so far, but being new to this it can be tricky to see which ones are best?

Hi and welcome.
Here is another that is just great.
www.netknots.com
There are very small number of basic knots for fly fishing:-
Leader to line
If you are using a loop, then learn how to tie a Perfection Loop in the leader for attachment.
If you are making your leaders, then learn about blood knots a water knots
For tying flies to leaders, the leaner about the improved clinch knot or uni knot
If you are using droppers, then learn how to make a dropper loop.
Leant them so that your do them without thinking and you will be able to cope with all situations. Cheers

Thanks for that - should come in useful.
As I'm just starting out I just wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting time learning knots when there are better ones I could be using.
I take it the Water Knot is just the Surgeons knot by another name? I'd heard the Water knot mentioned before, but hadn't seen pictures of it. Just looked on Fish&Fly though and they seem to be the same.

Very interesting Col. I see the avatar has changed to Ross reels this week, can't wait for next week.
