Default fishing in harsh weather

is it just me that enjoys battling with the elements? or am I just slightly S+M......

I was out on the river this eve, it was raining, windy, and the river was well blown making it difficult to wade and fish but I found it incredibly satisfying when I caught fish. I guess it makes you feel alive when your being beaten up by the weather.....

anyone else share the same views?

next time theres a storm brewing stay half an hour longer.... it'll test your casting!! unless theres lightning, that will test if your rod is carbon fibre or not

I look at it as a question of perception.

Most non-anglers will consider "nice weather" to be sunny, very little wind, temps from 70 to 80, etc. Essentially, exactly that produce the worst fishing, for me anyway.

My idea of perfect conditions for trout is a March day, cloudy or partly cloudy, daytime high temp of about +3 C, just enough snow on the ground to keep it from warming up too fast and touching off the melt, etc. Perfect for trout fishing.

I think you're right, though. There is something to going out and getting a little roughed up by the weather and still having a good time and catching fish.

Good on ya Jonnie... man after me own heart, well, almost...
I must confess I like a bit of 'nice' weather when I'm on the river, which ain't that often these days. I do like the sun on my back though... swallows... bunny wabbits etc etc Stillwater though, that's another matter. The wilder the better. I just love being afloat in a wind that our water companies would never even dream of letting you out in... life jacket or not I love it when it's tricky casting, controlling your line, controlling the boat, staying on your seat, and keeping your breakfast down Nothing beats not knowing whether a surfer is gonna come by on the next wave, or a huge brown is gonna come flying out of the surf to nail yer muddler. Heart stopping stuff.

The wilder the better for me on the big waters.

The fish don't mind adverse weather and neither do I. I look forward to wet windy days in summer when the fish will come through the waves to cahse and hopefully nail your flies.
Had some of my best days when I've been wet thorugh froma combination of rain and waves alshing over the boat. Now that's fun!!

I'm glad you guys agree.... I was beginning to feel a wee bit strange

thats exactly what it is rob- a good damn challenge, it's nice to know you can get around obstacles and still catch fish.

The killer for me on rivers is a strong wind, using light outfits does not work well for me in those conditions! I manage ok with a #5. If I've got a heavier outfit I'm prepared
