Default Controlling the non-national threat to Lough Corrib

No, not a racist rant

Article in todays Irish Times about the fisheries board's attempt to stop the spread of some kind of introduced weed in Corrib.

The Corrib's curly weed problem. This weed is the biggest threat to Corrib at the moment. As far as I am aware there are 250 sights and it is spreading. Each year I see more new shoots of this stuff and it only seems to root in bays with silty bottoms. I wouldn't be in favour of cutting this stuff as that seems to be the way it is spread. When it was first cut in Rinnaroon bay it was carried on a north west wind in the waves over to the Headford side of the lough. Since then that side has now developed a problem with the curly weed. I have seen a number of bays I loved to fish lost to this stuff and I must admit it is heartbreaking to witness this. In defence of the WRFB they seem to be doing their best to deal with this problem and hopefully this new matting will kill this foreign invader. I have been in a few bays that they have cleaned up and it is great to see this weed gone. Lets hope in this current climate of government cut backs that there will be the funding to do away with this weed once and for all.
