Default Help needed for elderly beginner

Hello - I have just started fly fishing rather late in life I want to learn the basic fly tying I have studied many books including The Fly Tying Bible, but I can not follow them too well I need to know what feathers are used to make what etc, I am hoping to find someone who maybe able to spare me a few hours to show me one to one fly tying, I live in Essex is there anyone not too far that could give me some one to one lessons.

Welcome to the forum.hope you have some luck.I would add that flytying is not necessarily part of the flyfishing experience. It would be better to get yourself proficent at flyfishing and buying your flies, then when you felt that you had got a handle on the fishing side.maybe then put your hand to tying.Trying to do the two together is a big ask.IMHO.

PS if you do decide you want to tie,Then go to the 'step by step' section of the flytying thread and scroll to the bottom and you will find all the begginers advice you will ever need.

Jim

Hi', Roger, and welcome to FFF. As one who is now 74, I appreciate how you must feel, starting out to learn the ins and outs of fly fishing and fly tying. I wish I could help with our learning; but geography is in the way, I am a Cumbrian, bred and born, and I stll live here.
A clue to the feathers you use is found directly in many patterns by seeing the name of the fly. For example, Partridge and Orange means just that --- a dark partridge hackle, taken from between the shoulders, and a simple orange tying thread body, or one made using fine floss, segmentatation, or attraction, being given by the use of a fine gold wire rib. Generally, when a dressing is given for a fly, all the materials are listed, usually, like Thread, Red silk or a modern material; Body, peacock quill or a dubbed fur; Rib, gold or silver wire; Hackle, red game hen or cock, for a dry fly or a wet fly; Wing, starling primary, mallard, CDC, polywing etc; Tail, as hackles, or red ibis, wool tag etc.
It gets a lot easier as you gain knowledge. Start with simple patterns and master the control of the basic materials and methods before going on to winging and the more complex, iimitative patterns, which are not really essential anyway. Click on to Fly Tying and Step By Step in the drop-down listing. There is loads of help available, and do not be afraid to askwhat you think are very basic or daft questions. We all profit when someone asks a question. Best of luck, and hope to hear more from you on here. Terry Cousin

There's a branch of the Fly Dressers Guild in Chelmsford – I'm sure they'd be delighted to show you the ropes.

Hi Roger,

Sorry can't help with a - 1-to-1 tying guide; but, I can guide you in the direction of a web-site and forum, that has video fly tying with explanations of : How, What Where and Why. You could also contact the guy (Mark Roberts) who does the fly tying in most of the video clips!

The site : www.gwentanglingsociety.co.uk

I would say, this is the best fly tying video guide I've seen!

Hope this helps Roger? and welcome to the forum!!

Mostyn

Google "You Tube" and look up "Learn Fly Tying Intermediate Lesson 1 with David Cammiss"

Its the same as having a personal tutor.

Hi Roger, I'm not a local but I know Hanningfield Flyfishers run fly tying evenings from time to time as well as instructional fishing sessions.

Take a look at :

Hello 31bgrayling. I do see what you mean but I am quite experienced as I run a fishing club but this is just course fishing so I am ok at handling fish and also casting is pretty fair ( well I thought so probably you boys would call it rubbish casting), but what I need is a one to one chap to give me some points as I do not even know what a hackle is I have some tying gear I got from Ebay it is just I do not know how to use the feathers and gear kinda thing they say make wings but from what and how do I remove bits from the feathers. So you see the position but thank you all for such a wonderful welcome and response. I am hoping to find someone to help local or fairly local anyway .
