Default Fishing Loch Rannoch and the surrounding area.

Morning all,

I'm planning a camping trip with my brothers to the Loch Rannoch area and was wondering if anyone here had info on which lochs are worth visiting, and the permit situation etc. WHilst we will probably be camping near to Loch Rannoch, we'll more than likely try and head out to the more inaccessible lochs for some real wild fishing. Has anyone got any recommendations in this regard? What about permits for these other lochs? Just looking at the maps, the likes of Loch Finnart, Loch Monaghan and Loch Eigheach look nice, along with the small hill lochs dotted around to the south-west of Rannoch station.

Cheers!

P

Dunalistair loch was always very good with some monster wild browns in it. Haven't fished it for 20 years but while it was difficult tehre was a real chance of a monster. It's very shallow with rich feedinga nd if you get it on a day witha good blow and cloud cover you could expect fish up to and over 5 lbs on wet fly. Soldier palmer was my favorite up there.

Don't know any contact details but beats fishing for 1/2 pounders.

Cheers Iain, although it appears Dunalistair is boat only from the estate, and we'll probably be on foot. Looks a nice loch though...

Yep there's no bank fishing but there are some monster trout in there. Worth a cast if you can get on.

Have a look on the wild fishing forum:

http://www.wild-fishing-scotland.co.uk/

You should find plenty on there. Theres a rivers and lochs database too which has some information about Rannoch, not sure about the surrounding lochans though.

Provided none of the lochs are stocked you can fish ANY of them for free, for brownies.

Scotlands a wonderful place

For local information and loch and river fishing in the Rannoch area try the Pitlochry Angling Club website. Permits for boat and bank fishing on lochs with wild brownies and stocked rainbows too, available from Pitlochry tackle shop and local bailiffs in Rannoch area.

www.pitlochryanglingclub.co.uk

I fished Loch Kinnardochy with my brother the other week and had nice browns up to 2lbs. If you are prepared to fish on until past midnight then you can experience some amazing rises of fish to buzzer hatches. Try mainly black flies near the surface.

If you're staying at Kilvrecht campsite take plenty of midge repellant and better still, a headnet !!
Loch Rannoch itself has great fishing.

Aye, we're planning to stop at Kilvrecht - it'll not be mid september so i'm hoping the midge swarms will have subsided (wishful thinking perhaps...!)

I've just got back from that area. Have a look at the attached thread.

Flies for Gaur, Tummel and Nearby Lochs

I can put you in touch with the estate that has the fishing on the Gaur and on some of the Lochs that you mention. The other info. on the thread might be useful also.
