Default Chalkstream help please

Hello folks,

I have some fishing booked in Wales for this Thursday on the Usk although it looks like it is going to get rained off. I am hoping to write an article for FF and FT about the fishing and I have a friend from the states who is fishing with me. If we get rained off I thought that we might go for a Chalkstream to give my friend from the states a true 'English' experience. He is a very serious fly fisherman in the states so I am hoping to find something on the Test, Itchen or Kennet that might be an exciting venue and might be something he will remember. I am looking for a day ticket water and hope to write another article for the magazines about the day. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Our budget is a maximum of £100 per rod.

Many thanks for your help,

Robert

If he is a serious fisherman are you sure you want to take him somewhere the fish are stocked and looks like someones back garden?
British fly fishing at its finest..entirely artificial

Quite. Say "chalkstream" and many think it's like Gleneagles. Some parts of the Test are but they're also like fishing a stocked stillwater. Some chalkstreams, however, are like this:

Early Season Chalkstream Heaven

The real deal. Don't think "Corporate Test Beat" when you think chalkstream

Hi Bumps... even that looks a little "qualcast" to me It has fences and bridges. Here are some wild ones I wouldn't mind finding in my back garden.

Yes I agree with that ickypimp. I have had the pleasure of fishing some stunning bits of the Hampshire chalkstreams - many unstocked and as wild as a chalkstream can be. I also think that the manicured, Kew Gardens look alike beats are becoming less and less acceptable because of changing attitudes and expectations from fishermen.

I like to think that the chalkstreams are becoming managed in a more subtle way thanks to organisations such as The Wild Trout Trust etc. Changing things done for many generations will obviously take time but we're getting there whether that be in stocking policies or keeping practices.
