Default How many of you laddies from north of the border:

Wear the kilt when ye goo fushin?

Many years ago I went to a game fare somewhere in England. (I've forgotten where) There I watched a Scotsman called Peter Anderson give a fly casting demo using single and double handed rods. He was very good indeed and true to being a proper Scot he dressed in kilt, sporran and all the other trimmings. I thought he looked the part and when I visited Scotland with my wife in 1970, I managed to do a little fly fishing.

But what struck me was that the only Scottish people wearing proper Scottish dress were in Edinburgh in and around the Castle. I never saw one Scottish angler in the kilt, and as a person with much good Scottish blood running in her veins, my late wife was most dissappointed.

So is traditional Scottish dress out of fashion in Scotland today? I must admit I have seen more men wearing the kilt in England and South Africa.

What's the traditional dress for men in Rotherham? Is it hobnailed boots and a flat cap and trousers pulled up your crack with a pair of braces?

No mate that's Barnsley dress lad. Here in Rotherham we can't afford proper clothes so we use old sacking dipped in tar.

For me, the kilt comes out for weddings and other formal events only.

Wearing a kilt while fishing up here would be suicide - with the midges and other savage insects we get (particularly bad this year) any exposed skin gets attacked!

The only time you'll see a real scot wearing that 'English' skirt you call a kilt is in Edinburgh (where they are all more than slightly confused) and en route to a wedding so that they can mischievously show off their 'tackle' to the bridesmaids.
The kilt is not traditional Scottish dress. However the philabeg/filibeg: Gael. feileadh-beag (look it up) is!

Yes I know that Trout Heaven. My late wife was particularly interested in geneology and had several books on Scottish names and tartans each clan was entitled to wear. The interesting thing was that the filibeg was also worn by the ancient tribes of Wales, Ireland Cornwall and the North of England including Yorkshire where I was born.

I even remember a full blooded Zulu proudly wearing the Stewart dress tartan at a Caledonian evening I went to in 1992.

It's not just the Scots who have the kilt (I think I will stick to the term kilt as most people will know what I mean) as traditional dress.

Mind you I think it is very important to prevent Scousers wearing these fine traditional clothes.

Very fetching when the corporate version is worn by those in authority
