This one could be read as an add on to topconkers post re how to fish a blob!!

I am a river and wild trout man at heart,

but am no novice at put and take rainbow trout fisheries, the type son number 3 has taken to frequenting, with several of his pals, mainly on the bait ponds.
As is the way in the father son thing sons 1 and 2 (rarely fish, but have tried) start a discussion about whether son 3 is better angler than dad or vice versa dad tries his best not to get involved but ends up having to accept fishing challenge, son 3 will fish against dad to see who is best however dad must fish fly (as he is always harping on about it being better-- so say sons 1 & 2) and son 3 will fish bait. Arrange day session yesterday (father and son ticket) at reasonably local fishery which allows any method on one of its ponds. I have never been before, son 3 has, get there and fishery manager greets me with comment along the lines "you gonna show them all how its done".

The word all has me thinking, turn round to son 3 who has legged it to pond, get there, three of his mates all rigged up ready to take me on too!!

Ever felt like you were up against it?
Anyway set up fly rod, its howling a gale and raining on and off, bait and spinning mates not having any luck, nor is dad. one hour to go (was 4 hour session) everbody still fishless, rude comments re stocking policy emmanating from bait fishers, but i have seen odd fish move, sit down, think hard for inspiration, rummage in fly boxes and find it! my one and only orange blob!! tie it on, 4 fish later, the rest as they say, is history

bottle of beer and son 3 and his mates now on mantelpiece, much to the delight of sons 1 and 2, glad somebody had faith in me!

wouldnt have tried if i hadnt read posts re blobs!

so topconker sometimes it is worth a chuck just like any other "fly" we cast out with the fly rod.
regards.
