Default Holiday in Ireland

For next year we want a change. Our normal destination for the last 6 years in May is Ballina County Mayo. We have fished the Moy at Foxford and The Ridge Pool. We have also fished the Conn, Cullen. River Gwestion and local loughs. We want to fish further south. We once fished with the "Doc" when we stayed in Headford near Galway but i cannot remember the name of the lough.
Our thinking at this time is to stay in Oughterad and fish the big loughs ,but i like a shot at the salmon.I know i can fish Galway for salmon but is there anywhere else?.We also like self catering. So any help from anyone including our Irish friends would be appreciated.

Brian

Not trying to be funny but you need to broaden your outlook on fishing.
Yes we have all heard of the ridge pool and some of us fished it, as this is the place that we see on the fishing programs but is it that great?
If now you have been focused on Corrib JJ o'mally's your man on here to tell you the ins and outs, or you could wander up to Leitrim and get a few surprises.
All the best whatever you decide but that bit of a not knowing puts some spice in our sport.

May on the Galway Weir can be productive with a larger sized salmon than the Moy. All depends on the weather and how many gates they have open at the weir. The river Clare is the main running river for the salmon and lake trout and comes more the the fore from July onwards. I'm in the Tuam Angling Club and there are a lovely stock of river trout. Then you have the Cong River on the grounds of Ashford Castle that is also productive for salmon especially in spring.

So from Oughterard you have Salmon, Trout and Pike on the fly on tap.
The Connemara Lake View Hotel has opened and is very charming. Plus there is no shortage of Angling Centers, the Ardnasillagh Lodge being the best on Corrib and Ireland. For reasons that speak for themselves. You also have the Erriff, Ballynahinch System (less productive, but breath taking scenery), the Screebe System - wild to say the least, and of course the famous Delphi.

To have a pint at the Ballynahinch Hotel and soak up the history is a pleasure in itself.
