Default beginner advice for lake & River fly fishing

I searched for beginner information, but did not really find what i was after, apologies if this is alrready answered, please point me to the correct threads

my wife and i went fly fishing for the first time on tuesday, beginner tuition and supplied all the kit as we where first timers

we are quite interested now, and was thinking of buying some kit..

the advice has been
Beginners kit, £34, with all the equipment included
9' rod 7/8 weight circa £130
9' rod 4/5 weight circa £90
various makes

we will just be casual fishers - to start, looking at both lake and river .....

I dont really want to buy something really cheap and find its very limited and only end up spending again

I would welcome any suggestions for two beginners to get started and not waste a lot of money

thanks

Welcome,

It depends on your budget and where you intend to fish.

For a start sensible budget for stillwaters (not resovoirs)

I would suggest is Shakespeare Odysee 9ft 6/7# c£25 (If you have a larger budget Shakespeare Trion c£50)
Greys G Series c£25
Line from Pitsford Pirate on here £14

Save your money for fishing and lessons.

You should take a look at this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Flextec-Fly-Fi...3A1%7C294%3A50

Ive bought this kit but in the 9ft version and the rod is truley excellent for the money, its got more of a tip action and it suits me down to the ground, its also a light rod,i managed to cast a rough 20yards in my first ever practice with this rod and,ive caught 8 fish on it so far up to 6lb+ and its handled them all superbly, the reel is actually not bad but im a tackle tart so ive upgraded to an orvis most of the fish i have caught have also been on the flies that came with it,but they wont last you that long, this rod was developed by the irish world team, for the price,i think its a bargain.

That flextec looks like a good deal.

someone recomended to me to get a temple fork outfitters kit. they do a kit for around £100 that comes with the rod, reel, backing, fly line and leader, plus rod tub that holds the reel still attached to the rod.

Ive been looking for a UK distrubuter for those rods as they claim to be performance rods at an affordable price.

Etaf, welcome to the forum.

Don't try or even think that you will get a rod that is suitable for still water fishing and river fishing. You have had advice on still water rods that I know very little about.

Generally middle actioned rods tend to be more suitable for beginners than tip (fast) actioned rods

If you are fishing together on rivers and still waters then i think you will need four rods! If you are not going to fish together very often then you could go for a river rod and a still water rod.

For a medium to large river I would suggest a 8'6" 4 weight line rod.

You can get away with a reel that will be suitable for both if you get spare spools or cartridges but go for the smaller lighter version of which ever make you choose. Reels just hold the line.

Lines are a matter of taste but Pitsford Pirate will be able to set you up with all the lines you will need at this stage in your progression.

Rod and reels from Shakespeare, Daiwa, Greys are going to be good quality, well priced and see you through many years of service before you will need to think about an upgrade, if you ever do.

Most rivers require wading and waders are a long subject on their own.

As somebody wisely said, above spend more on lessons/guiding than on your kit.

Thanks for all the advice
for some reason I'm not getting the emails from the site
anyway, we went fishing again on Saturday, and my other half caught two rainbow trout, 3lb 12oz and 4lb 4oz from Bratton Water
On the way home from Devon, we stopped off and
purchased some kit on Sunday from Harts Fly shop

9' 5/6 grey grxi rods and grxi reels
and loads of other bits and pieces
got the annual rod licences today

so we all set up to fish now...

Been advised that you can catch Carp on fly and we can fish at some local course lakes on fly
