Hi lenton. welcome to the forums. I'm not familiar with the water you mention but I'm sure someone will come along who does. As for what flies to use, well it's difficult on the limited information you've given. As in what's in the lake, what size is it etc. I find a good place to start on `first visits' to new waters is to talk to the fishery owner/ranger/bailiff etc. You can't beat local knowledge.

Hi mate,i went out on my first ever session on sunday and had my 4 fish easy i found they were taking buzzers bloodworm and nimphs,i had my first fish in 10 mins on a blood worm, they also seemed to like the brown colour flies for some reason,i tried a black and red goldhead and nothing, changed to a brown nimph and BANG fish straight on,im off again tomorrow and im taking some damsils,a veriety of goldheads and a couple of bloodworm buzzers, just hope i do as well as last time, good luck and all the best
Luke

p.s my mate only owns 12 flies and catches 99% of the time

Hi

I would check the board at the lodge for what has been catching or the record book. You can always buy a couple of flies from there and then as you get into it buy others you think might be good. Also, as others say, chat to the locals and they will stear you right

Well, not "July flies" per se, but a couple of klinkhammers on a flaoter fished static if there are fish showing. Buzzers are generally past their most prolific period imo but are always worth ago because there will always be a few hatching. A good "`go to' fly on a new water that's stocked with rainbows is a cat's whisker. Keep your eyes on the water and try to see if the fish are feeding off the top, watch out for wind-blown terrestrials and try and match your fly to them. If it's a larger reseviour the fish could be feeding on daphnia (tiny planktonic crustaceans), you won't be able to see them as they're tiny, but keep an eye out for fish cruising along the top. If they're feeding hard on daphnia then a lure stripped in quite fast accross their noes can bring good results.

As said earlier though, local knowledge will serve well, so don't be afraid to ask what's been doing the damage.
