Question Stockiebashing.

As a club member,I am thinking of asking my clubs AGM to put a limit of 25 fish C&R Per day.at present we have no limit (4 fish Kill limit)
Do you think this is a reasonable limit(mostly Stocked Brown trout)

Why ?

In coarse fishing guys can catch hundreds of fish and they all go back safe and alive and continue to be caught time after time, if you are lucky enough to have one of those days when you catch loads of fish why should you have to stop fishing because you have reached a limit ?

Would be better making it a rule that only barbless hooks are used and fish have to be un hooked in the water when possible.

hitting a 25 fish limit should be kudos enough for most fishermen,

if i caught 25 fish i doubt id go back, 25 wild bandies in a hill loch is fun, 25 stocked fish is just making it too easy.

Some members seem to feel that triple figures+ is OK when targetting stocked fish without debarbing hooks. I just think it is Iresponsible,We are going down the line of advising the need for barbless/debarbed hooks

You're problem is obviously handling of fish to be released as whether you catch 25 or 100 what's the difference.

I'd say an education for members on C&R policy and rules regarding C&R to be implemented, that would probably do more for the better than the fish limit.

Jim, imo if you dont use barbless you should not be allowed to fish c&r, un hooking the fish in the water is another must and if you use barbless hooks it makes the job a lot easier.

I might agree, but some of the old school are pretty hard to get to understand modern thinking on C&R. A pair of pliers and a knotted net don't quite cut it.

Hi Jim

I would agree with the others, education and strict rules regarding catch & release will make a far greater difference to the condition of your stock.

Barbless or de-barbed hooks at all times, certainly knotless nets (are knotted nets not illegal nowadays ) release fish in the water at all times and no touching fish with dry hands.

Best wishes
Mike

This is something I feel strongly about.

For a start, most coarse fish are considerably more robust than trout or grayling. You could probably play rugby with a live tench and it would still swim off unperturbed.

I would ask anyone who wants to catch and release a whole pile of stockies - just WHAT are they trying to achieve? Surely not to demonstrate how good they are. There is no merit in catching loads of stockies, and if I find myself amongst a shoal of them, I move on. Overwintered fish is what I am after.

All angling is about a challenge, whether you are a coarse or game man it matters not.

If you are suddenly catching fish after fish, what else have you got to prove? You have done the oracle, found out what beats them and have overcome their natural caution.

Do you HAVE to go on and commit piscatorial murder?

A couple of fish to take home and half a dozen released should please any reasonable angler.

My club has an 8 fish per day limit, which I think is more than adequate.
Any one who is lucky enough to find them selves in the right place at the right time when the fish are throwing themselves onto the hook (and lets be honest here, when we are talking about people pulling out numbers approaching triple figures it is more luck than anything else) should show some restraint!
Each time a fish is caught it makes it more difficult to catch the next time, so it's really a bit of an own goal.
