Default H. T. Sheringham

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone knows where I might find some biographical information on the great Hugh Tempest Sheringham, one of my favourite fishing writers.

The only information I can find is the brief biography on the Medlar Press authors' page.

I am particularly interested in any information concerning his birth and boyhood in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. I myself grew up in the town and learned to fish there as a boy.

Any help, or general comments concerning H. T. Sheringham would be appreciated.

regards,

Samson

There's a bit more biographical information in the introduction to this book, edited by Tom Fort, which is almost "H T Sheringham's Greatest Hits"

http://www.anglebooks.com/product.ph...d-by-tom-fort-

It's a very good read indeed. Some of the stuff about Blagdon is astonishing to the extent that, in effect, he says "...carry a lure rod and a nymph rod..." so he'd forecast the essence of modern reservoir trouting - before 1914.

Quite sad that Sheringham had a nervous breakdown through (over)working for the Government during WW1, and seems never to have been quite the same after that and until his early death in about 1930.

Hugh Tempest Sheringham, born 1876 died 1930 was one of the great angling luminaries of his age. He was one of the few anglers to have an obituary in The Times and wrote a number of books, his best being "An Angler's Hours" and "Coarse Fishing.

Sheringham epitomised the "all-round angler". Richard Walker was a great admirer of Sheringham and even suggested that what became known as the "National Association of Specialist Anglers", be called: "The Sheringham Society".

Sheringham himself fished for all the British freshwater species using all methods. I have in my hands now a copy of Coarse Fishing published in 1912. that's nearly 100 years ago.

His writing is wonderful, the book is a gem.

Thanks for all your responses. However, what I'm after is some detailed biographical information - it's proving very hard to find!

There's a couple of pages about him in John Bailey's "The Great Anglers"
The Great Anglers: Amazon.co.uk: John Bailey: Books The Great Anglers: Amazon.co.uk: John Bailey: Books
, but nothing about his early years in Tewkesbury.

You might try to get hold of a copy of his obituary from The Times, or contact these guys http://www.sheringham.mistral.co.uk/index.html to see if they've got any information.

Regards,

Doc

I don't have any of the information that you are looking for, but I recently found his book "Elements of Angling, 1908" thats got an signature on the front page by "F.C Rupert Ford, 13 June 1911"(who ever that might be). Is there any collectible value to these books?
