Default Casting Tips

I've been fishing a couple of months now, and far from being perfect, i was quite pleased how my casgting was going.
I am managing to get a haul or 2 in to help with distance. A problem that has started to occur the last few times i've been out is that on my release cast i.e. after all the false casts, the hook sometimes catches the leader line as the fly is rolling through. What am i doing wrong for this to be happening?

Cheers

I'm no expert but it sounds like you're getting a tailing loop. This is possibly caused by too much power . Try easing off a little and keep everything smooth .

Default casting

Tailing loop probably caused by too hard on the forward cast as has been said, too hard on theforward cast causes the rod tip to dip and pull the line UNDER the rod tip on the way forward, the line should unroll out OVER the top of the rod tip, hope you understand

No matter how easy you go, do you find some rods with soft tips are prone to throwing tailing loops?

If you are getting a tailing loop during hauling the main reason is that the rod is overpowered. On the back haul you need to haul as you go into the cast then as the cast extends back you need to drift the rod tip out (ie a bit further back) to unload it then you can apply the forward power on the forward haul in a controlled manner, remembering not to hit the last forward cast with a BANG or all will be lost....................birdsnest

Rods don't throw tailing loops , casters do.
If the power is right and applied progressively the loop will not tail regardless of how soft the rod is.
Some casters may be more prone to throw tailing loops with a softer rod.
Tailing loops are caused by the mis-application of power causing the rod tip to dip below its Straight Line Path (a.k.a SLP) as Rookstorm has already pointed out.

DanC pretty spot on there , all I would add is that it is to much power at the wrong point in the stroke, as it is possible to massively overpower a stroke and as long as the power is applied progressively the loop will not tail.

In all honesty, getting advice on what is quite a common problem with people wanting to cast further via an internet forum isn't going to get you anywhere near as far as a one hour lesson with a certified instructor. It's well worth it in my opinion.

Drop your thumb off the spine of the rod and try hoding it more like a hand shake. You may mind it takes ome tip shake out of your cast and improve it.

Other wise, calm down, slow down, relax and if in doubt use less power.

i was out for the first time last night at a small lough, now i haven't had any proper lessons yet but what i found was the more i kept thinking about how i was casting the more i messed up, i found that if i relaxed and had confidence in the line i was casting more consistant good casts (or at least i thought they were good) so my advice would be just to relax more and not to think so much
